Summer Meeting

NWDA Summer Meeting at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT

Impact of Millennial Generation is Common Theme Across Several Presentations

NWDA's Summer Meeting featured a slate of informative speakers, supplier sponsor displays, a golf outing and an evening networking reception, sporting their best Hawaiian shirts for a spirited networking reception at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville private lounge before adjourning to one of Mohegan Sun's numerous fine restaurants or trying their luck at the gaming tables.

For the sessions, the speakers from the fenestration industry and the business world covered a wide range of topics.  A common thread among several of the presentations was the topic of Millennials and the impact their generation is having on the business world.

Ken Hitchner of Creative Marketing Alliance kicked off the presentations with a summary of social media's importance and the announcement of his firm's special social media program offerings to NWDA members. Termed the "NWDA Affinity Program" the three packages provide social media strategy development, content creation, postings on several major platforms, and data analysis and reporting offered to member companies at a discount along with a rebate to the association. Hitchner's presentation noted the importance of social media to the Millennial Generation in terms of branding, product research and purchase decision making. Please contact NWDA Headquarters for more information about this program or to get started with social media for your company.

Our leading summer speaker, Mike Collins of Building Industry Advisors, gave informative updates on the American macro-economic situation as well as the current state of the window and door industry. Overall he sees economic indicators, while not booming, as generally positive. His economic concerns included slowing consumer spending and according to a study, the 29.8% increase over the past 5 years that direct and indirect regulatory environmental, labor and zoning requirements add to the cost of home construction.

Regarding Millennials, Collins noted they now constitute the largest American generation ever, but their differences from prior generations present challenges to employers and the home building industry. Collins cited statistics saying that 20% (or 1 out of 5) of Millennials changed jobs last year to "do something else" and that 71% are "are not fully engaged with or are disengaged from their work." Millennials also buck the norms of prior generations by being less interested in home ownership.

Rajeev Sharma of ITAC and Stan Stone of Greystone Business Solutions provided an in-depth joint presentation on the benefits, methodologies, and implementation planning for both Lean and Six Sigma process improvements for manufacturing and other business operations. Sharma noted that many of the New York area startup industrial firms he works with have predominantly Millennial workforces.

A particularly lively, interactive and informative presentation on the "Change Process" was given by Rochelle Carrington with Sandler Training by Second Wind Advisory Group. Using real world business and personal examples from the audience, Ms. Carrington walked the attendees through the process of communicating and realizing true positive change for companies, employees and yourself.

Dave Roth of Henkel drew the speaker agenda to a close with his talk on the history of, the current state of, and the potential to improve window and door installation flashing with modern techniques and materials.

"I'd like to recognize the support of many sponsors that made the conference activities possible and so successful," said Steve Chen, NWDA President and Crystal Windows COO. "Extruders, equipment makers, glass manufacturers, and component suppliers are the lifeblood of this industry, and we appreciate their partnership with our window and door manufacturer members."

2014 Summer Meeting a Success!

Thank you to all who attended, sponsored and exhibited at our annual Summer Meeting and Golf Outing at Caesars Atlantic City! It was a beautiful time of year at the Jersey shore and NWDA members enjoyed a friendly game of golf at Stockton Seaview Golf Club. Following the tournament, the causal reception was held at Bally's Mountain Bar so everyone could re-connect and network with other members, non-members, and sponsors. Tuesday the conference was packed with a number of educational sessions as well as table top exhibits.

On the Agenda
Sessions on Tuesday kicked off with an Exhibitor Product Showcase for table top sponsors to share with attendees information about their company and products. Joe Reed from Architectural Testing began with his report on codes and specs. Next up was new member Vin McLoughlin from Cardinal Logistics Management Corporation who spoke about dedicated contract carriage in the window and door industry. Then, every summer we invite fenestration and construction industry economic expert Michael Collins of Building Industry Advisors to share his insights about the state of our industry and the outlook for the future.  We followed up with a legal topic with Rick Merkert of Architectural Testing on field testing methods for quality assurance, forensics and litigation and then with Ian Hucul of Crystal Windows on contract, collections, liens and best practice policies for manufacturers. We concluded the successful meeting with Brian Waldman and Eric Horndahl of Renoviso reviewing one of our Board member’s websites in how to generate business from your website, followed by lots of questions from audience members about how to make their sites better. Meeting Presentations are Available Didn't make it to Caesars in Atlantic City for the 2014 Summer Meeting?
