NWDA 2016 Winter Meeting
Valley Forge Casino Resort
King of Prussia, PA

Despite coming on the heels of a record regional snowstorm, decision makers from window and door manufacturer and supplier firms traveled to attend the annual 2-day Winter Meeting of the Northeast Window & Door Association (NWDA).  Held January 25-26, 2016 at the Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia, PA, just outside of Philadelphia, the productive conference featured insightful speaker presentations, supplier tabletop exhibits and great networking.

The educational program offered on the second day of the conference was penetrating, informative and well received by the attendees.

Speaker presentations covered a variety of topics including:
—    Richard Voreis with the Consulting Collaborative kicked off the program with a presentation on Building Construction and Market Trends.  His wide-ranging talk covered issues such as changing architectural trends, new materials and products, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and new construction and remodeling opportunities for window and door companies.  Among his several astute predictions were the growth of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) use, the relatively quick transition from "dumb" to "smart" glass, and the concern that the window-to-wall ratio limit issue will be resurrected.

—    Building a brand using social media was the topic for speaker Ken Hitchner of Creative Marketing Alliance.  Claiming social media is the new "word of mouth," he presented a 4-step plan of strategies and tactics for a firm to capitalize on the ability of social media to alter the sales cycle.

—    Kevin McKenney of the Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) outlined the organization's legislative and regulatory issues advocacy program and highlighted the industry's progress being made on the EPA lead testing issue.  He promoted and urged attendees to participate in the annual Washington, DC Fly-In Conference this April, for which NWDA is partnering with WDMA.

—    The Zero Energy Ready Home Program was the topic of speaker Joe Nebbia representing the Federal Department of Energy (DOE).  He described the various building systems requirements and DOE's promotion efforts for this new initiative.  The far-reaching program seeks to advance home building practices in terms of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability beyond building code and Energy Star requirements.

—    Jon Hill of Keystone Certifications rounded out the speaker program with an update on Building Code and Energy Incentive Programs.  His presentation covered the recent reinstatement of federal tax credits for home window replacements, a graphic review of code implementation variations between states in the Northeast, and online sources to search for local and regional utility incentives related to window replacement.

The conference's first day featured a welcome reception and supplier sponsor tabletop exhibition and networking for the initial part of the evening. Attendees continued networking as the group retired to the resort's Valley Tavern for a lively and fun craft beer and wine tasting event.

NWDA Hosts Successful Winter Meeting!

Over 70 key decision makers from window and door manufacturer and supplier firms participated in the annual 2-day Winter Meeting, held January 12-13, 2015 at Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, CT. The productive and enjoyable conference featured informative industry speakers, tabletop supplier displays and a special "speed networking" reception event.

The Winter Meeting educational sessions offered on the second day were well received for their value and timeliness. James Lang of WTS Paradigm provided a thought-provoking, future-focused presentation on the concept of "Big Data" and its potential value to the fenestration industry. Brad Boone of PPG offered insights as to the current national concerns over float glass production capacity, pricing, transportation challenges and how best for manufacturers and glass suppliers to work together in 2015 in his presentation. Other presentations included Kevin Koonce of the Vinyl Building Council and Joe Reed of ATI.

In keeping with recent NWDA conferences, the first day's evening reception featured speed networking sessions between the tabletop supplier exhibitors and the manufacturer attendees.  In a fashion similar to a speed dating forum, suppliers moved from table to table at timed intervals to meeting a manufacturer, thereby assuring everyone met each other in an effective and extremely efficient process.

Following the speed networking reception, attendees descended to Foxwoods High Rollers luxury bowling facility. Awaiting them in the exclusive event area were six dedicated lanes, pool table and a private cocktail bar with plentiful hors d'oeuvres.  The fun evening networking spurred some spirited but friendly competition with prizes awarded for both the highest and lowest bowling scores.
